Conor McGregor has “relinquished” featherweight belt; Jose Aldo promoted to champion

The UFC confirmed during the UFC Fight Night Melbourne broadcast tonight that Conor McGregor has “relinquished” the UFC featherweight championship and that interim champion Jose Aldo has been promoted to UFC featherweight champion.

With Daniel Cormier injured and out of his title bout with Anthony Johnson, UFC also announced that Max Holloway vs Anthony Pettis has now been promoted to the main event of UFC 206 and will be for the interim UFC featherweight belt.

McGregor revealed after UFC 205 that he would be taking an extended break while his long term girlfriend has their first child and UFC president Dana White revealed that McGregor will likely be out until May 2017.

No explanation for the new interim featherweight belt has been provided at this time.
