UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor was yesterday granted a professional boxing license in the state of California.

The news came via Helwani shortly following confirmation that the UFC had stripped the Dubliner of his featherweight title belt, which he picked up back in December of 2015.

Confirmation of the license reignites speculation surrounding a potential boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather. Both athletes have been hinting at a potential bout over the past number of months, most recently Mayweather in an interview with TMZ (below).

It’s possible McGregor is using the boxing license for leverage in a contract renewal with the UFC, however some have suggested he could also be looking to test the ‘Ali Act’ within MMA and to book a boxing bout with Mayweather.
