Calvin Katter and Giga Chikadze clashed at the top of the featherweight division in the UFC Vegas 46 main event at the UFC Apex on Saturday night. Jake Collier took on Chase Sherman in a heavyweight contest which was the evenings co-main event. Here are all the highlights, and the official results from the opening UFC card of the year.
TJ Brown took on Charles Rosa in the opening bout of the card, both featherweights fought all three rounds with Brown taking home the unanimous decision win.
Brian Kelleher defeated Kevin Croom in what was a very entertaining featherweight battle. Kelleher dropped Croom, who took the fight on short notice, in the first round. Croom timed a knee in round two which opened up a cut on “Boom”, Kelleher chose to grapple in round three which helped him pick up the unanimous decision on the judges scorecards.
On his 12th year competing under the UFC banner Court McGee picked up yet another win and got his second win on the bounce against a durable Ramiz Brahimaj. McGee’s experienced showed throughout, Brahimaj threatened with a guillotine at stages of the fight but never came close to a finish. The judges awarded the fight to Court McGee unanimously.
Bill Algeo picked up his second win of his UFC tenure as he beat Joanderson Brito by unanimous decision. Brito started well but looked jaded after one round, the Brazilian had some small success on the feet but Algeo looked much stronger in the grappling department.
Viacheslav Borshchev snatched the first finish when he landed a devastating liver shot on Dakota Bush. Bush started well and forced Borshchev’s back against the wall at the start of round one. Borshchev, who impressed when he defeated Chris Duncan on the Contender Series, ended the fight with a little over one minute left in round one to pick up a win on his UFC debut.
Katlyn Chookagian put on a really good performance against her flyweight rival Jennifer Maia to take home a unanimous decision win and is now undefeated in three fights.
Two top flyweights fought to a very close decision as Brandon Royval and Rogerio Bontorin squared on at 125-pounds. Royval seemed to get the better of round one landing his jab at will and also causing some damage to his Brazilian counterpart off his back. Bontorin landed the heavier shots in round two to take that round. Royval took over once more in round three against a fading Bontorin, who looked to have tapped out while caught in an armbar, it was Royval who ended the round on top and that was enough for him to take home the split decision. A really entertaining fight overall.
Jake Collier dominated Chase Sherman and got the rear-naked choke finish in the co-main event. Collier landed on the feet before taking down Sherman and cutting him with an elbow. Collier forced Sherman to give up his back and the fight was over moments later as the ref was forced to step in as the Collier sunk in the choke.
In the main event Calvin Katter went to war with Giga Chikadze over five rounds. The forward movement and pressure of Katter was something Chikadze had difficulty dealing with throughout the fight. Katter took advantage of a slip in round one to take his opponents back and dominated the round. Landing big shots throughout the main event Katter piled it on Chikadze enroute to a one-sided unanimous decision victory.
