After much speculation in the past couple of weeks, it was today confirmed by the UFC that Conor McGregor’s world title shot against featherweight champion Jose Aldo will take place on July 11th in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC 189 as part of the fourth annual international fight week.

Entering the UFC as a two-weight Cage Warriors champion with much hype, McGregor has been unflappable inside the Octagon to date. The Dubliner has won all five of his UFC bouts with consummate ease, knocking out Diego Brandao, Dustin Poirier and Dennis Siver in the space of six months after coming back from an ACL tear which had kept him on the sidelines for almost a year. Those wins were enough to earn McGregor a title shot in what will be, by a distance, his toughest test yet.

His opponent, Brazil’s Jose Aldo, is the first and only ever UFC featherweight champion after carrying his belt over from the now defunct WEC. Having only lost once in his MMA career, Aldo recently entered his 10th year of an unbeaten streak which has seen him win eighteen consecutive fights. Since coming over to the UFC, Aldo has won seven fights, taking out names like Chad Mendes, Kenny Florian and Frankie Edgar along the way. But just like McGregor, this fight looks set to be the biggest of Aldo’s career to date both in business terms and as a contest.

Although Croke Park had long been a suggested venue, the fight will now act as the showcase for the 2015 International Fight Week which starts in Vegas on July 7th and runs until July 15th. The extravaganza will include events such as the UFC Fan Expo, a free concert and open workouts. The main action will happen on the Saturday night, though, in what is expected to be the biggest featherweight bout in the history of MMA.
